Singapore Denies Entry to Exiled Hong Kong Activist Nathan Law

Officials say his presence was not in the national interest following a border security assessment that noted an outstanding Hong Kong arrest warrant.

Overview

  • Singapore’s Home Affairs Ministry said Law was questioned on arrival from San Francisco on Sept. 27, refused entry after immigration and security checks, and returned on the earliest flight on Sept. 28.
  • Law said he held a valid single‑journey visa, was detained for about 14 hours, and had planned to attend a closed‑door, invitation‑only event in Singapore.
  • Authorities stressed that holding a visa does not guarantee admission, stating that Law’s entry and presence would not be in Singapore’s national interests.
  • MHA noted Hong Kong police have issued a National Security Law warrant for Law, who is also among exiled activists targeted with HK$1 million rewards, and Singapore maintains an extradition treaty with Hong Kong.
  • Hong Kong leader John Lee responded that no country should harbour criminals and vowed to pursue fugitives, declining to say whether Hong Kong sought Law’s transfer from Singapore.
