Singapore Banking Pioneer Wee Cho Yaw Passes Away at 95

Wee Cho Yaw, former UOB chairman and celebrated philanthropist, leaves a lasting legacy in banking and community service.

Wee Cho Yaw, the former chairman and CEO of United Overseas Bank (UOB), has passed away at the age of 95.
Under Wee's leadership, UOB expanded from a single branch to a regional powerhouse present in 19 countries, with assets totaling S$516 billion ($384 billion) as of September 2023.
Wee was also a prominent figure in Singapore's community, leading the Hokkien Huay Kuan and the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations, and contributing significantly to the Chinese Development Assistance Council.
He was recognized for his contributions with honorary doctorates from the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University.
Wee's legacy is marked by his business acumen, philanthropy, and the values of honor, enterprise, unity, and commitment he instilled in UOB.
