Singapore and Shenzhen Set Out Gateway Linking Greater Bay Area to Southeast Asia

Gan Kim Yong casts closer links as a way to turn tariff-driven disruption into opportunity.

  • In a Sep 2 meeting in Shenzhen, Gan Kim Yong proposed pairing Shenzhen’s Greater Bay Area role with Singapore’s Southeast Asia hub to create a two-way gateway.
  • Both sides said they will deepen cooperation in artificial intelligence, the digital and green economies, supply chains, healthcare, sports, tourism and cultural exchanges.
  • Gan and Shenzhen party secretary Meng Fanli reaffirmed the SingaporeShenzhen Smart City Initiative, noting scope to expand projects in areas such as AI and the digital economy.
  • Gan encouraged companies to use the SIJORI model by manufacturing in Johor, sourcing from Batam and using Singapore as a logistics and headquarters base.
  • Against new tariff pressures and shifting supply chains, Gan highlighted Guangzhou’s Knowledge City as a 15‑year tech testbed, visited NUS’s institute, DBS Technology China and Singrow, and urged staff exchanges to spur cross‑learning.
