Sing Sing’ Becomes First Film Released in Theaters and Prisons Simultaneously

The Colman Domingo-led drama will be available to over 1,100 correctional facilities and theaters nationwide starting January 17, 2025.

  • The film, based on the real-life Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) program at Sing Sing Prison, features a cast largely composed of formerly incarcerated individuals.
  • Its simultaneous release in prisons and theaters marks a historic first, facilitated by collaborations with A24, RTA, and Edovo, a nonprofit providing educational tools to incarcerated individuals.
  • The movie will be accessible to nearly one million incarcerated people via Edovo tablets, though the real-life Sing Sing facility is not yet equipped with this technology.
  • Colman Domingo, who portrays John 'Divine G' Whitfield, has received significant awards buzz, potentially becoming the first out gay Black man to win an acting Oscar.
  • The cast will also perform the play depicted in the film, 'Breakin’ the Mummy’s Code,' live in February at the New York Theatre Workshop.
