Overview
- Sindh senior minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said work on the BRT Red Line has accelerated, carpentry and carpeting are complete at several points on University Road, and the government has set a mid-September target to reopen the artery to traffic.
- The province says agreements have been signed and orders placed for 500 electric buses for Karachi and that officials are also considering additional double-decker buses and taxis to expand modern public transport.
- Memon reported that work on the Yellow Line BRT is progressing alongside the Red Line and that bridges and other infrastructure components are under construction for the corridor.
- Political messaging accompanied the site visit as PPP leaders reiterated that any new province must follow constitutional procedure, criticized the MQM’s past recruitments and land encroachments, and urged courts’ orders on medical access for Imran Khan to be implemented on humanitarian grounds.
- Officials framed the transport push as part of a broader development drive tied to Thar coal, which the province says now supplies more than 3,500 megawatts, while also acknowledging lingering municipal problems such as electricity, water and sewerage that could affect project delivery and operations.
