Sindh Local-Body By-Elections Underway Across 14 Districts

Officials pledge secure, accessible, closely monitored voting.

  • Polling is in progress on 28 local seats that include two district council members, six chairmen, seven vice chairmen and 13 general or ward members.
  • Voting runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for 243,187 registered voters at 167 polling stations, with 34 labeled sensitive and 127 highly sensitive and a mix of men’s, women’s and joint facilities.
  • Karachi police have deployed 1,552 personnel, including 160 in East, 1,003 in West and 389 in Keamari, to secure polling locations.
  • The Election Commission has set up a monitoring control room and directed strict enforcement of the code of conduct, and a public holiday is in effect in the polling districts.
  • Notable Karachi contests include the Orangi UC chairman race featuring PPP’s Shahnila Amir against JI’s Khurshid Alam, with other seats open after officeholders’ deaths or elevation such as in Manghopir UC-10 and Baldia UC-8.
