Sindh Imposes Higher Traffic Fines, Introduces Demerit Points to Curb Dangerous Driving

Officials frame the crackdown as a road-safety push with digital monitoring to track repeat offenders.

Overview

  • Sindh amended the Twelfth Schedule under Section 121-A of the Motor Vehicles Ordinance, 1965 to establish a provincewide demerit-point regime with substantially higher penalties.
  • Overspeeding now draws Rs5,000 for motorcycles, Rs15,000 for cars, and Rs20,000 for heavy vehicles, each carrying eight demerit points.
  • Driving without a licence incurs fines up to Rs50,000 with six points, reckless driving carries Rs25,000 with eight points, and other risky behaviors such as one-wheeling, no helmet, tinted windows, wrong-lane driving, and rooftop passengers face heavy fines.
  • Authorities say the measures target life-threatening violations, with licence suspension or cancellation for repeat offenders alongside plans for digital monitoring, police training, and public awareness campaigns.
  • Separately, the federal communications minister ordered tougher motorway enforcement, warning FIRs for speeds above 150 km/h, fines for speeds over 120 km/h, and strict axle-load compliance.
