Sindh Accelerates Karachi Evacuations and Demolitions of Unsafe Buildings

Officials ordered immediate action with rehousing commitments for residents displaced from initial evacuations.

Overview

  • Assistant commissioners have completed a general survey of 471 of 588 buildings deemed highly dangerous, gathering ownership and occupancy details.
  • Authorities ordered technical assessments for all 588 sites and tasked the Sindh Building Control Authority to extend comprehensive surveys to Hyderabad, Sukkur and other cities.
  • The government prioritized rehabilitation for residents from 59 evacuated buildings, including construction of replacement flats with support sought from ABAD and Saylani.
  • Previously vacated structures are slated for demolition and evacuations will be sped up, a directive reiterated Friday by Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon.
  • Local enforcement pressures were evident as the Cantonment Board cut power to City View Apartments before restoring it after MQM-P leader Dr Farooq Sattar submitted a written guarantee, while he also alleged builder collusion.
