Sindh Accelerates Evacuation of Unsafe Karachi Buildings, Sets Demolition of Vacated Sites

The effort now pivots from surveys to enforcement with rehousing promised for residents from 59 evacuated buildings.

Overview

  • Senior minister Sharjeel Inam Memon ordered immediate evacuation of unsafe structures and said already vacated buildings will be demolished with rehabilitation ensured.
  • Assistant commissioners have completed a general survey of 471 of 588 highly dangerous buildings, gathering details on ownership, residents and units, according to Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi.
  • The Sindh Building Control Authority has been directed to launch comprehensive technical surveys in Karachi and expand similar assessments to Hyderabad, Sukkur and other cities.
  • The government plans to construct flats for displaced families and will seek support from ABAD and the Saylani Welfare Trust for rehabilitation efforts.
  • Implementation strains surfaced when the Cantonment Board cut power to Saddar’s City View Apartments after declaring it uninhabitable, with supply later restored following MQM-P leader Dr Farooq Sattar’s intervention and a written guarantee.
