Overview
- Howie Mandel told E! News on Friday that Cowell was 'just hours out of surgery' and that he had heard the operation was successful, though Mandel had not yet spoken directly with Cowell.
- Host Terry Crews announced on the August 25 broadcast that Cowell would miss multiple live episodes for a back operation that could not be postponed, triggering production changes.
- Producers moved quickly to protect the show's timeline by installing rotating guest judges; Kenan Thompson has already filled in and Heidi Klum is scheduled to return to the panel next week.
- There is no public timetable for Cowell’s recovery or return to the judges’ desk, and AGT is handling voting and broadcast logistics on a week-by-week basis to safeguard the semifinals and the two-night finale.
- Cowell previously suffered major spinal injuries in a 2020 e-bike crash and has had multiple related surgeries and long-term nerve damage, a history that makes any new back procedure and recovery period especially consequential.
