Siliguri Secures ₹60–70 Lakh Grant for North Bengal’s First Styrofoam Recycling Plant

Secured funding will underwrite a detailed project report led by the Public Works Department alongside the Agriculture Marketing Department to finalize the location of a 500 kg-per-day thermocol plant.

Overview

  • The Siliguri Municipal Corporation has obtained a grant from the 15th Finance Commission to establish a pilot recycling facility at the Champasari Regulated Market.
  • The proposed plant is designed to process up to 500 kg of polystyrene waste daily, addressing the market’s 200–250 kg of thermocol output each day.
  • SMC, the Public Works Department and the Agriculture Marketing Department are jointly drafting a Detailed Project Report covering processing workflows, sanitation measures and safety upgrades.
  • A site inspection and final location survey within the Regulated Market precinct are in the works to determine infrastructure needs and plant layout.
  • Discussions with Agriculture Marketing Minister Becharam Manna aim to integrate improved drainage, power supply and security features into the overall development plan.
