Sikorsky Unveils Cockpit-Less U-Hawk, an Autonomous Black Hawk Conversion

The rapid prototype targets logistics and mission support using tablet-operated MATRIX autonomy with flight trials planned in 2026.

Overview

  • Revealed Oct. 13 at AUSA, the S-70UAS U-Hawk is a UH-60L refit that removes the cockpit and adds actuated clamshell doors with a forward loading ramp.
  • A new fly-by-wire architecture integrated with Sikorsky’s MATRIX software enables fully autonomous takeoff, flight and landing under the command of a tablet operator.
  • The redesign increases internal volume by about 25%, accommodating up to four JMICs, a HIMARS rocket pod or roll-on/roll-off uncrewed ground vehicles, and it retains a 9,000-pound external lift capacity.
  • Sikorsky cites endurance up to 14 hours or self-deployment beyond 1,600 nautical miles, and emphasizes commonality with UH-60 engines, transmissions and rotor systems to reduce cost and maintenance.
  • Developed in roughly ten months with company funds, the prototype is not tied to a current Army requirement, with rotor-turning tests and first flight scheduled for 2026 as other teams pursue unmanned UH-60 logistics solutions.
