Sikorsky Unveils Cockpit-Less U-Hawk, a Fully Autonomous Black Hawk Conversion

Sikorsky is pitching the U-Hawk as a company-funded demonstrator pending flight tests in 2026.

Overview

  • Revealed Oct. 13 at AUSA, the S-70UAS U-Hawk removes the UH-60L cockpit and installs actuated clamshell doors and a ramp, creating about 25% more usable cargo volume.
  • The prototype integrates MATRIX autonomy with a third-generation fly-by-wire system, enabling tablet-based operation from start-up through landing under adjustable levels of autonomy.
  • Sikorsky cites mission payloads such as four JMIC containers, a HIMARS six-rocket pod, two Naval Strike Missiles, and roll-on/off uncrewed ground vehicles, plus an external cargo hook rated around 9,000 pounds.
  • Performance goals include self-deploying more than 1,600 nautical miles and loitering for up to roughly 14 hours, with the company targeting first flight next year after a roughly 10-month conversion effort.
  • Built from a bought-back UH-60L and leveraging parts commonality to lower costs, the U-Hawk is not tied to a current Army requirement as the service pursues other unmanned logistics efforts and retires older Lima models.
