Sikhs for Justice Targets Ambedkar Statue in Punjab’s Nangal Village for Second Time

Authorities registered charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita with the probe focused on tracing the masked vandal through CCTV footage.

Two months after a similar incident, a statue of BR Ambedkar, the architect of the Constitution, was vandalised at Nangal village of Phillaur sub-division in Jalandhar district on Monday, triggering tension. (HT)

Overview

  • On June 2, a masked assailant smeared black ink on the Ambedkar statue and spray-painted anti-Constitution and pro-Khalistan slogans on a nearby school wall in Nangal village.
  • Sikhs for Justice chief Gurpatwant Singh Pannun claimed responsibility in a video denouncing the Indian Constitution over Operation Bluestar.
  • This attack follows a similar vandalism on March 31 at the same site despite protective glass installed around the earlier statue.
  • Phillaur police invoked Sections 113 (terrorist acts) and 299 (hurting religious sentiments) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita to investigate the defacement.
  • BJP leader Tarun Chugh and local Dalit activists have condemned the state government’s response and demanded rapid arrests and enhanced security for Ambedkar monuments.
