Significant Drop in Youth Alcohol Poisoning Cases in Bavaria and Saxony

DAK reports a notable decrease in hospitalizations for alcohol intoxication among young people in 2023 compared to the previous year.

  • Bavaria saw a 17% decline in alcohol poisoning cases among youths aged 10 to 19, with 1,643 cases in 2023.
  • The most significant reduction in Bavaria was among 15- to 19-year-old boys, with a 21% decrease from the previous year.
  • In Saxony, the number of youths hospitalized for alcohol intoxication fell by 10% to 884, the lowest since 2019.
  • The decrease in cases is attributed partly to successful prevention campaigns, such as 'bunt statt blau,' which will continue in 2024.
  • Despite the positive trend, health officials emphasize that excessive drinking remains a concern among children and teenagers.
