Siberian Cold Plunges to −54°C With Moscow Forecast Near Season Lows on Jan. 18

Emergency services deploy warming points with rescue teams for Epiphany rituals.

  • The Irkutsk hydrometeorological center reports local lows down to −54°C as average temperatures run 7–15°C below normal.
  • Forecasters expect the harshest Epiphany night cold in Siberia: −35 to −40°C in Zabaykalsky Territory and Irkutsk Region, and −31 to −36°C in Yakutia, Omsk, Tomsk and Tyumen.
  • In Moscow on Epiphany night, temperatures are forecast at −10 to −12°C in the city and −9 to −14°C across the region with light snow and a west to northwest wind of 5–10 m/s.
  • The night of January 18 could be among the season’s coldest in the capital, with −17 to −19°C expected in Moscow and locally to −23°C, and −17 to −22°C across the region with pockets to −27°C.
  • Authorities in Irkutsk Region are preparing 75 ice holes for the holiday and staffing about 900 emergency personnel, with 68 road warming stations in operation; recent lows in the Moscow area reached −25.9°C in Serebryanye Prudy and −25.8°C in Cherusti.
