Shuri Castle’s Main Hall Exterior Restoration Completes as Protective Roof Comes Down

The press unveiling of the restored façade begins removal of the temporary roof to clear the way for corridor reconstruction en route to a 2026 finish.

Overview

  • Restoration of the Seiden exterior was finished inside the 25-meter temporary roof and opened to the press on August 6, 2025.
  • Dismantling of the protective superstructure began in June and has accelerated following the façade unveiling.
  • Under the government’s “visible reconstruction” policy, more than 5.2 million visitors toured the restoration site by the end of June 2025.
  • Officials expect the full exterior to be exposed by late October 2025, allowing the public a complete view for the first time since the 2019 fire.
  • Once the roof is removed, work will shift to rebuilding corridors and connections as the project advances toward its autumn 2026 completion.
