Shubhanshu Shukla Gets Hero’s Welcome in Lucknow After ISS Mission

Using his first hometown visit since splashdown, the IAF Group Captain cast his ISS experience as a springboard for Gaganyaan and urged students to aim for a Moon landing goal set for 2040.

Overview

  • He arrived at Lucknow airport to cheering crowds, family reunions and a roadshow, with Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak and city leaders leading the reception.
  • He was slated for a series of state honours through the day, including felicitation events with Uttar Pradesh leadership and a program at his alma mater, City Montessori School.
  • A day earlier in New Delhi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hailed Shukla and three fellow Gaganyatris, as Shukla credited the Indian Air Force with preparing him for spaceflight.
  • Addressing students, he said perseverance is the key to success, called India’s space outlook “extremely bright,” and told youth to aspire as the nation pursues a 2040 Moon-landing vision.
  • Shukla became the first Indian to visit the ISS on Axiom-4, spent about 18–20 days conducting more than 60 experiments, returned on July 15, debriefed in Houston, and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 18.
