It locks in an on-site solar farm for power generation plus local jobs alongside biodiversity gains all under strict weekend work curbs.

Overview

  • On July 18 the northern planning committee unanimously backed Grundon Sand & Gravel’s revised 15-year extension for Tern Hill quarry after HM Prison & Probation Service raised concerns about early Saturday blasting.
  • Planning conditions bar work before 9 am on Saturdays and ban all operations on Sundays to protect HMP Stoke Heath inmates’ permitted lie-ins.
  • The scheme plans to extract roughly 80,000 tonnes of sand and gravel annually, totalling about 1.2 million tonnes over the lifespan of the quarry.
  • An on-site solar farm will power extraction activities and feed surplus electricity back into the grid as part of the project’s renewable energy component.
  • Site-management controls will address noise, traffic and visual impacts while delivering five full-time jobs, six part-time roles and substantial biodiversity net gain.
