Shreyas Iyer Takes Six-Month Red-Ball Hiatus, Named India A ODI Captain

BCCI cites recurring post-surgery back spasms, prompting omission from the Irani Cup as well as the West Indies Tests.

Overview

  • Iyer informed the BCCI he will pause red-ball cricket for six months to focus on endurance and fitness after recurring back spasms and stiffness.
  • He was not considered for the Irani Cup and has been left out of India’s Test squad for the home series against West Indies.
  • The BCCI added Iyer to India A’s three one-dayers versus Australia A in Kanpur starting September 30 and appointed him captain.
  • Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said the India A role is an evaluation of leadership qualities, not confirmation of future ODI captaincy, and allows workload management.
  • Iyer led India A in the first four-day match against Australia A but missed the second, where Dhruv Jurel captained in his place.
