Shreyas Iyer Takes Six-Month Red-Ball Break, Will Lead India A in Australia A ODIs

Selectors call the India A stint a workload plan, not an ODI handover.

Overview

  • Iyer informed the BCCI he will step away from red-ball cricket for six months due to recurring back spasms and stiffness after prior back surgery in the UK.
  • He was omitted from selection for the Irani Cup and left out of India’s Test squad for the West Indies home series announced on September 25.
  • The BCCI named him captain for three one-dayers against Australia A in Kanpur on September 30, October 3 and October 5 as part of a managed white-ball program.
  • Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said the India A captaincy should not be read as confirmation of ODI leadership and stressed the focus is on giving Iyer three games before the Australia white-ball tour.
  • Iyer captained the first four-day game against Australia A, did not play the second as Dhruv Jurel led, and the A squad will be bolstered from the second ODI by Tilak Varma, Abhishek Sharma, Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh after Asia Cup duties.
