Shreyas Iyer Set for Domestic Return Before NZ ODIs, Pending CoE Clearance

The ODI vice-captain is following a staged return after a spleen injury, with match time in the Vijay Hazare Trophy planned before national duty.

Overview

  • Iyer is training at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for multi-day assessment and is expected to remain there until December 30.
  • He is expected to join Mumbai in Jaipur on January 2 and play Vijay Hazare Trophy matches on January 3 and 6, subject to medical clearance.
  • If all goes to plan, he will link up with India’s ODI camp in Vadodara ahead of the New Zealand series beginning January 11.
  • An MCA official said he is batting well in the nets with no discomfort, with a formal fitness decision anticipated in the first week of January.
  • His return could influence Ruturaj Gaikwad’s place in the squad, while Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya are set to be rested for the ODIs for workload management.
