Short Daily Bursts of Vigorous Activity Linked to Major Heart Health Benefits

New research finds that brief, high-intensity movements can significantly reduce cardiovascular risks, particularly for women who do not exercise regularly.

  • A study using UK Biobank data found that as little as 1.5 to 4 minutes of vigorous intermittent lifestyle physical activity (VILPA) daily reduced major cardiovascular risks, especially in women.
  • Women who engaged in an average of 3.4 minutes of VILPA daily were 45% less likely to experience major cardiovascular events, with a 51% lower risk of heart attack and a 67% lower risk of heart failure.
  • Men also benefited but to a lesser extent, with those averaging 5.6 minutes of daily VILPA showing a 16% reduction in cardiovascular risks compared to non-exercisers.
  • Examples of VILPA include climbing stairs, brisk walking, carrying heavy groceries, or other short, high-intensity activities integrated into daily routines.
  • Researchers emphasize the importance of making these activities a consistent habit, noting that even small, regular bursts of movement can have significant long-term health impacts.
