Shopify Lets Browser AI Agents Complete Store Checkouts

The change gives agents standardized browser APIs that let them inspect, change, and place orders after a shopper explicitly approves the purchase, signaling a move toward agent-driven commerce.

Overview

  • Shopify announced on Monday that eligible merchants can now let browser-based AI agents finish purchases using new WebMCP checkout tools.
  • The platform added three browser APIs — get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout — that let an agent read the checkout, change order details like address or delivery, and submit the order after approval.
  • Shopify built safety limits so agents cannot enter payment credentials and a buyer must explicitly authorize any final payment.
  • The feature rolled out with zero merchant setup to Liquid storefronts and a Hydrogen preview and runs as a Chrome origin trial, so it currently works only in Chromium-based browsers.
  • Shopify is already integrated with agents such as Meta’s Muse and Instinct and supports Shop Pay, and the move could raise new questions about merchant control, liability, privacy, and cross-browser adoption.
