Shoot Order Issued After Pune Leopard Kills 13-Year-Old as Protests Block Highway

Forest officials plan DNA matching from captured leopards to target the individual linked to the fatal mauling.

Overview

  • Rohan Vilas Bombe, 13, was fatally attacked around 3:45 pm in Pimparkhed village, Shirur, according to local forest officials.
  • The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests approved an emergency, time-bound shoot order, with five sharpshooters, 25 cages, 10 camera traps, and drones deployed.
  • Villagers torched a forest patrol vehicle and vandalised a Quick Response Team base; a large road blockade on the PuneNashik highway forced police to divert traffic.
  • This was the fifth leopard-related death reported in Pune district this year, the second in Pimparkhed in about 20 days, and the third in the area in a month.
  • Parallel operations in Nashik recently trapped two three-year-old female leopards in Chehdi and Chandshi, now at the Mhasrul treatment centre, as officials warn more animals may be present and urge reports via helpline 1926.
