Shivakumar Pledges ₹10 Crore for Lalbagh, Rules Out 6-Acre Acquisition in Tunnel Plan

The deputy chief minister described an alignment that avoids Lalbagh with only short-term use of peripheral space.

Overview

  • Only about half an acre near the Ashoka Pillar will be used for tunnel access and exit, with roughly one acre of parking taken temporarily for storage before full restoration.
  • The tunnel will not pass under or through Lalbagh, and any small trees removed will be replanted, according to D.K. Shivakumar.
  • The tunnel project is at the tender stage with bids invited, and the contract will be awarded to the best bidder.
  • A ₹10 crore package will fund Lalbagh upgrades including a revamped rose garden, free public toilets, round-the-clock medical support with an on-site doctor and ambulance, and a gym for seniors and women.
  • During the 'Walk with Bengaluru' outreach, officials recorded citizen suggestions and contacts for follow-up, and cameras will be installed at garbage black spots to enable enforcement.
