Shindo 4 Tremors Extend Tokara Island Evacuations Ahead of Senate Vote

Toshima Village officials are urging displaced islanders to use early voting in Kagoshima City due to seismic shocks delaying their return.

Overview

  • The Japan Meteorological Agency has recorded about 1,900 earthquakes of shindo 1 or higher around the Tokara Islands since June 21.
  • Two shindo 4 tremors struck near Akusekijima on July 11 and another on July 12, each at about 20 km depth and magnitudes of roughly 4.7–4.8.
  • A total of 64 residents—49 from Akusekijima and 15 from Kodakarajima—remain evacuated in hotels in Kagoshima City.
  • Toshima Village moved its repatriation decision from July 14 to July 17 and set July 18 as the earliest return date pending five days without further shindo 4 quakes.
  • With returns ruled out by election day, village officials have opened early voting at the Kagoshima City office for the displaced islanders.
