Shimla Landslide Shuts St Edward’s for Second Day as Crews Work to Reopen Circular Road

The closure follows a pre-dawn slide on Shimla’s vulnerable Himland slope that blocked a key artery.

Overview

  • Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap ordered St Edward’s closed on September 19–20 as a precaution under the Disaster Management Act.
  • Staff were exempted from physical attendance and the school was directed to run classes online during the two-day shutdown.
  • The slide struck around 1:50–2:00 a.m. near the campus, with officials warning of ongoing instability and advising residents to avoid the area.
  • Circular (Cart) Road was closed at Himland with traffic diverted via Sanjauli and Khalini–Bemloe as PWD teams ran round-the-clock debris clearance and slope stabilisation with 20–25 tippers and excavators.
  • State updates on Saturday reported 425 roads shut, including three national highways, and a separate landslide cut off McLeodganj, with estimated monsoon losses around Rs 4,754 crore.
