Overview
- The $11.89 million stems from a 2022 default judgment after Sanders did not appear at a Texas civil trial over a 2015 school confrontation with security guard John Darjean.
- Sanders filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in October 2023 to try to erase the judgment and the court opened a bench trial this week to test dischargeability.
- Opening day testimony on Monday, Aug. 31, included prerecorded witnesses who said Sanders punched and elbowed Darjean, while the defense says Sanders, then 15, acted in self-defense.
- Shilo has not yet testified and Judge Michael E. Romero has ordered Deion Sanders to be available remotely on Friday, Sept. 4, though it is not certain he will be called.
- If the judge finds the injury was willful and malicious the debt will survive bankruptcy and collection may continue, and if the judge finds it was not the debt could be discharged subject to appeal.
