Shillong Launches First App-Based E-Bike Sharing Pilot
Twenty electric bicycles can be rented via a scan-to-unlock app system at official stations to test nonmotorised transport goals.
Overview
- Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and fitness icon Milind Soman inaugurated the Ride Shillong pilot deploying more than 20 e-bikes at key city points on August 12.
- Riders download the Ride Shillong app to scan QR codes for unlocking bikes and must return them to designated stations under a Rs 50 deposit plus Rs 10 per hour fee.
- The Meghalaya Urban Affairs Department is steering the project in partnership with GIZ India under the SUM-ACA programme with backing from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
- Electric-assist bicycles were selected to overcome Shillong’s steep terrain and make cycling accessible to users of varying ages and fitness levels.
- Officials describe the pilot as an initial step toward the Shillong Urban Mobility Policy 2024 target of 35% nonmotorised travel, with broader expansion and infrastructure upgrades planned next.
