Overview

  • The state government approved a Rs 10,000 shifting allowance and Rs 2,000 monthly support for five months as it pushed back the final relocation deadline for hawkers lacking valid Certificates of Vending to July 22.
  • On July 1, members of the Meghalaya & Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association demonstrated at the Meghalaya Secretariat, denouncing what they called illegal evictions and demanding an emergency PTVC meeting.
  • Hawker representatives and allied groups alleged significant flaws in the digital survey that issued vending licenses, accusing authorities of granting permits to shop owners while denying long-standing vendors.
  • The Shillong Municipal Board, backed by district administration and police, resumed its eviction drive in Khyndailad on June 30, leading to scuffles and incidents of protesters reclaiming seized goods.
  • SMB CEO P. K. Boro said eviction notices complied with legal procedures and applied only to unlicensed vendors, and officials have directed the PTVC to reconvene to address remaining concerns.
