Overview

  • Former Sen. Sherrod Brown has decided to enter the November 2026 special election in Ohio to challenge appointed Sen. Jon Husted for the remainder of Vice President J.D. Vance’s term, though he has not yet formally launched a campaign.
  • Brown lost his 2024 reelection bid to Republican Bernie Moreno by a 50.1%–46.5% margin and has since created the Dignity of Work Institute to advocate for blue-collar workers.
  • Jon Husted was appointed by Gov. Mike DeWine in January to fill the vacancy left by Vance and will serve until January 2029 unless defeated in the special election.
  • Democrats, led by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, recruited Brown as their top candidate to contest a state that Trump won by double digits and that they need to flip to reclaim the Senate.
  • The National Republican Senatorial Committee has already released memos projecting confidence in Husted’s prospects and warning that Ohio’s rightward trend poses an obstacle to Brown’s comeback bid.
