Sheriff's recruit dies after 8-month battle with injuries from crash with wrong-way driver

sheriff's recruits were struck by an SUV while jogging during a training run in Whittier, CA in November.
The SUV driver was initially arrested but later released as the investigation became more complex.
Alejandro Martinez fought for his life for 8 months before succumbing to his injuries at UCLA Medical Center.
Martinez was highly regarded by peers and instructors in the sheriff's training academy Class 464.
The crash is still under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
