Sheriff Releases Full Ransom Notes in Nancy Guthrie Case

Officials say the notes were posted to prompt new leads by highlighting distinctive language while surveillance clips and forensic tests continue to guide the active investigation.

Overview

  • On July 31 the Pima County Sheriff’s Department published the full text of two ransom messages that were emailed to Tucson TV station KOLD in early February to seek help identifying the writer.
  • The first note, sent Feb. 2 and addressed to Savannah Guthrie, demanded $4 million in Bitcoin rising to $6 million if a second deadline passed and threatened to kill Nancy Guthrie if payment was not made.
  • The second note, sent Feb. 6 and addressed to the Guthrie family, said the sender believed Nancy ‘perished shortly after she was taken’ and apologized, citing her fragile heart condition.
  • Investigators are focused on doorbell camera video showing a masked man who appears to have surveilled the home, a blood match to Nancy on the exterior porch, a mixed DNA sample now under multi‑lab and FBI analysis, and other physical traces that have not identified a suspect.
  • The case remains active with no arrests, public rewards offered (reported amounts vary), repeated public pleas from Savannah Guthrie for tips, and mounting scrutiny after an early detainee who was released has filed a notice of claim against the sheriff’s office.
