• Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna identified Andres Adan Chavez, 20, as the suspected gunman and said investigators are seeking information on his whereabouts.
• Saith Mendez, 13, was shot just before midnight on Aug. 23 outside a 76 station on Whittier Boulevard while he waited for his mother working inside.
• Luna said evidence indicates there was no confrontation before the shooting and that the assailant fired at close range and then shot Mendez multiple times after he fell; the teen died at the scene as his mother witnessed the attack.
• After the gunfire, the suspect fled into a nearby neighborhood, while the driver and a female passenger stayed, were detained for questioning and later released pending further investigation.
• Authorities say the killing is not connected to a separate Aug. 21 Pico Rivera homicide, and a community fundraiser for Mendez’s funeral had surpassed $9,000 toward a $15,000 goal.
