Sheriff Identifies Victims in Montara Shooting South of Topeka

Investigators describe a domestic case with the man showing an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

  • Deputies were dispatched for a welfare check to the 6700 block of Southwest Briarmeade Lane just before 10 a.m. on Aug. 27 and found both individuals with gunshot wounds.
  • Preliminary findings indicate a domestic incident, with the sheriff's office reporting Brian Bevitt appeared to have a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
  • Two juveniles associated with the residence were at school during the incident, were found unharmed, and are now in the custody of family members.
  • A multi-agency response led nearby Auburn-Washburn USD 437 schools to enter secure-campus status that morning, the scene was cleared by 1:15 p.m., and the school measures ended by 1:45 p.m.
