Overview
- Deputies responding to a welfare check just before 10 a.m. on Aug. 27 found two people dead from gunshot wounds at a home in the 6700 block of SW Briarmeade Lane in Montara.
- The sheriff’s office says Brian M. Bevitt, 45, appeared to have a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and Erica E. Bevitt, 42, died of a gunshot wound.
- Two juveniles linked to the residence were at school during the incident, were located unharmed, and are now with family members.
- A large multi-agency presence led to an apparent hours-long standoff, and Auburn-Washburn USD 437 schools entered secure-campus status that was lifted by 1:45 p.m.
- The scene was cleared by about 1:15 p.m., authorities acknowledged assistance from the Kansas Highway Patrol and Shawnee Heights Fire Department, and the investigation remains active.
