Sheridan Police Fatally Shoot Man Reported to Be Wielding a Machete on Bike Path

The officers are on leave under standard protocol pending an outside investigation.

Overview

  • Police say they responded about 6:15 p.m. Thursday to South Clay Street and North Drive after several 911 reports of a man with a machete on the Bear Creek Bike Path.
  • Two callers reported being threatened with the weapon, according to the department.
  • Officers say they issued numerous commands to drop the machete, retreated as the man advanced, and deployed less-lethal devices that they say did not work.
  • Police say they then fired, took the man into custody, and provided medical aid before he was transported to Swedish Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
  • The 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is investigating, and the Arapahoe County Coroner will release the man’s identity later.
