Sheinbaum Showcases Texcoco Ecological Park, Announces 2026 Sign-Ups for Sports Programs

The former airport site is now a 14,000-hectare protected area recognized by UNESCO for ecohydrology work.

Overview

  • President Claudia Sheinbaum visited the Parque Ecológico Lago de Texcoco with State of Mexico Governor Delfina Gómez and promoted the site in a social media video on December 28.
  • New registrations will open in January 2026 for sports and recreational activities, including baseball, soccer, American football and gym use at the park.
  • Sheinbaum called the canceled airport project inviable and said the park benefits residents in eastern State of Mexico and Mexico City.
  • The Texcoco area was decreed a federal protected natural area in March 2022, covering roughly 14,000 hectares.
  • SEMARNAT leads a hydrological recovery program for the lake and wetlands, and in 2025 UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme designated Texcoco as Mexico’s first Ecohydrology Demonstration Site.
