Sheinbaum Sets 2030 Target for Tren del Norte Passenger Rail

Bundling rail, road, social-program investments aims to drive regional development.

Overview

  • President Claudia Sheinbaum said the passenger rail corridor linking Mexico City, Saltillo, Monterrey and Nuevo Laredo will be completed before the end of the sexenio in 2030.
  • Sheinbaum reported construction advances and said the Saltillo–Nuevo Laredo segment is already under way while the Querétaro–San Luis Potosí–Saltillo line is entering the bidding phase.
  • The federal plan pairs the rail work with large road projects, including a 191 km Matehuala–Entronque Puerto México bypass budgeted at MXN 15,500 million and an expansion of Federal Highway 57 between Monclova and Saltillo.
  • The president tied the infrastructure push to Programas para el Bienestar payments and local projects, saying this package will bring hospitals, housing and jobs and citing beneficiary and budget figures for Nuevo León and Coahuila.
  • Reporting on Monday, Sept. 7, 2026, shows these are government claims and the 2030 completion date remains an administration commitment that requires verification of procurement, financing and construction milestones.
