Sheinbaum Readies Electoral Reform as Opposition Presses Safeguards for INE and Party Funding

The proposal remains in drafting, with experts urging consensus to protect autonomous electoral bodies.

Overview

  • President Claudia Sheinbaum said the initiative is still being prepared and not yet headed to Congress, with reported goals including fewer deputies, eliminating party-list seats and reducing election and party financing.
  • Sheinbaum urged public officials who plan to seek candidacies in 2027 to resign or take leave to avoid mixing government duties with electoral activity.
  • Chamber president Kenia López Rabadán outlined a 10-point framework calling for impartial INE and TEPJF, exact representation without overrepresentation, gender parity and protections to keep criminal money out of campaigns.
  • Ex-INE officials working with the emerging group Somos México met López to present a technical proposal and insisted any changes be approved by broad political consensus.
  • The debate is sharply split: PRI leader Rubén Moreira labeled the plan the “Ley Maduro,” warning of weakened institutions and illicit financing, while Morena’s Arturo Ávila defended cost-cutting and more territorial representation and pointed to debate in the next legislative session.
