Overview
- President Claudia Sheinbaum signed the decree in Tihosuco, Quintana Roo, declaring community tourism an activity of public interest and a national priority.
- Three Community Tourism Destinations were designated at launch: Maya Ka’an (Quintana Roo), Camino del Mayab (Yucatán) and Pueblos Mancomunados (Oaxaca).
- Fonatur will provide annual investment to strengthen infrastructure and equipment, beginning with consolidating Maya Ka’an as a flagship destination.
- The decree establishes a National Coordination for the Promotion of Community Tourism chaired by Fonatur with Welfare, Environment, Culture and Tourism secretariats, the Agrarian Prosecutor’s Office, INPI, universities and civil society.
- The framework is designed so most services are provided by cooperatives and community enterprises, with the government citing direct FAISPIAM support to 18,000 recognized communities and 13 billion pesos allocated this year.
