Sheinbaum Leads Mexico’s ‘Grito’ as First Woman, Stresses National Sovereignty

She used the Independence Day platform to reject foreign interference outright.

Overview

  • President Claudia Sheinbaum delivered the traditional grito from the National Palace balcony on Sept. 15 and rang the historic bell to mark the 215th anniversary of Mexico’s independence.
  • A military parade followed on Sept. 16, where she said, “No foreign power makes decisions for us,” and added that “no interference is possible in our homeland.”
  • Her remarks come as the United States presses Mexico on cartels and border security, with President Donald Trump having offered to send U.S. troops, while her government has increased cartel enforcement, transferred suspects to U.S. authorities, and cited lower fentanyl seizures at the border.
  • Authorities in parts of Michoacán and Sinaloa curtailed public celebrations because of cartel violence, with Sinaloa holding only a single official civic event announced by Gov. Rubén Rocha.
  • Historians described her leading the ceremony as a marked departure from the ritual’s traditionally patriarchal history.
