Sheffield Tribunal Dismisses Worker’s Claims Over Boss’s Doctor WhoDalek’ Mug

The judge said the mug reflected the manager’s fandom, not a message aimed at the claimant.

Overview

  • Employment Judge Kirsty Ayre ruled there was no deliberate placement of the mug to target support worker Joshua Aderemi.
  • The Dalek mug bore the line, “You may think that I am listening but in my head I am thinking of exterminating someone,” which the tribunal deemed a Doctor Who reference.
  • All claims of race discrimination, disability discrimination and a health and safety detriment were dismissed by the Sheffield Employment Tribunal.
  • Manager Alan Wordsworth, identified as a Doctor Who fan, was found to use the gifted mug for drinks at work and said he did not recall it being in the June 28, 2023 meeting.
  • The tribunal noted Hesley Group had gone to considerable lengths to support Aderemi, who joined the autism-care provider in January 2023 after arriving from Nigeria on a student visa.
