Shedd Aquarium Introduces Alface, First Sloth in 20 Years

The two-toed sloth is acclimating off exhibit before joining the Amazon Rainforest gallery as a conservation ambassador.

Overview

  • Shedd Aquarium on Nov. 20 publicly introduced Alface, a Linné’s two-toed sloth, as its newest resident.
  • Alface was born at the Dallas Zoo in 2023 under the Association of Zoos and AquariumsSpecies Survival Plan.
  • She arrived in Chicago in September and is currently training and bonding with caretakers behind the scenes.
  • Staff plan to place her in the aquarium’s Amazon Rainforest exhibit once they determine she is ready for public viewing.
  • She will be used to connect visitors with Amazon wildlife and raise awareness of threats such as deforestation; her name means “lettuce,” the first solid food she ate.
