Shaun Ryder Says Pneumonia Made Him Miss Mani’s Funeral

He told BBC Breakfast that pneumonia hit after Black Grape’s tour, forcing him to recover on antibiotics over Christmas.

Overview

  • Ryder said he and Black Grape bandmate Paul “Kermit” Leveridge fell ill as their tour wrapped on 20 December.
  • He returned home the day before the 22 December service at Manchester Cathedral and collapsed, preventing him from attending.
  • Ryder described spending most of Christmas unwell and only recently getting out of bed following treatment.
  • He credited antibiotics for a swift improvement, saying he has been up for about four days.
  • Appearing alongside Mark “Bez” Berry, who did attend the funeral, he promoted a Happy Mondays 35th‑anniversary tour set to start in March.
