Sharp Rise in Antisemitic Acts in Belgium and France Since Israel-Hamas War
Reports of antisemitic acts, including online hate messages and physical assaults, have surged in the wake of the conflict.
- Antisemitic acts in Belgium and France have risen sharply since the Israel-Hamas war began.
- In Belgium, 91 reports related to the conflict were received between Oct. 7 and Dec. 7, 2023, compared to 57 reports for the whole of 2022.
- In France, 1,676 antisemitic acts were reported in 2023, compared to 436 the previous year.
- Most of the antisemitic acts involved hate messages, more than half of them online, and there were also comments made in public areas.
- The report cited cases of beatings, graffiti and the desecration of dozens of graves in the Jewish section of a cemetery close to the city of Charleroi.
