Sharaz Ali Convicted of Four Murders in Bradford Arson as Accomplice Found Guilty of Manslaughter

Sentencing will follow at Doncaster Crown Court.

Overview

  • A Doncaster Crown Court jury found Sharaz Ali guilty of four counts of murder and one of attempted murder, and convicted Calum Sunderland of four counts of manslaughter.
  • The blaze on August 21, 2024, killed Bryonie Gawith’s children Denisty, 9, Oscar, 5, and Aubree, 22 months, along with their mother at their Westbury Road home in Bradford.
  • Prosecutors said Ali acted out of jealousy after a violent relationship ended, presenting messages, petrol purchase records and doorbell/CCTV footage to the jury.
  • Evidence showed Mohammed Shabir drove the men to the house, Sunderland kicked in the door while carrying petrol, and Ali poured fuel inside before igniting the fire as first responders fought to save those inside.
  • Sunderland was cleared of murder and of attempting to kill or seriously harm Antonia Gawith, while Ali was rescued with severe injuries; Shabir died in custody before trial and both convicted men await sentence.
