Overview

• Nitin Shete, 43, was discovered hanging in his home at the trust’s Shete Vasti complex and was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital, leading police to register an accidental death case.
• A July audit by the charity commissioner flagged more than 2,400 ghost employees, inflated payrolls and the use of fake donation apps to divert temple funds.
• A First Information Report was filed three weeks ago after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered criminal proceedings and involvement of Maharashtra Cyber in the investigation.
• Fadnavis disclosed the scale of the scam during the monsoon legislative session and vowed that all those responsible would face charges.
• Police will also probe whether Shete was complicit in the alleged graft as they review evidence gathered by Maharashtra Cyber and other agencies.
