A worker was jailed in China for secretly drugging a colleague with sedatives to steal work plans.

Overview

  • On July 12, the Shanghai Jing’an District People’s Court found Li guilty of deceptively administering sedatives and handed down his prison sentence.
  • Prosecutors showed that Li spiked colleague Wang’s drinks at three dinners in Xuhui and Yangpu districts between August and November 2022 to obtain confidential work plans.
  • After each incident, Wang suffered dizziness, vomiting and loss of consciousness and required hospital treatment.
  • Forensic tests on Wang’s urine and hair confirmed the presence of clonazepam and xylazine, and authorities noted that clonazepam is classified as a Class II psychotropic drug in China.
  • Li obtained the so-called “truth serum” from a seller who falsely claimed a few drops would compel truth-telling, underscoring ethical and regulatory challenges in corporate espionage.
